The Social Side of Gaming: Epilogue

There are moments in your life that make you believe that you’ve finally found the truly great people in the world. I had one of these moments recently. Sit back, and I’ll tell you all about it.

I was at home this weekend, hermitting hardcore, like you do. Suddenly, my phone’s notification light began to blink. I checked, and it was a text message from one of my closest gamer friends. I’ve told you about him before… He told me that the latest installment of a franchise we both love was on sale. Marked down, the price seemed just right on Steam. Except for one thing: I was flat broke. I relayed the sad news to him, and settled back into my binge – watching of Netflix.

A few minutes later, the light began blinking again. Thinking he replied, I picked up my phone again to find out that it was instead an email. I’m a little obsessive about clearing my notifications, so I checked it, and it was from Steam. “You’ve received a gift copy of ….” I think I grinned for a full minute before my brain let me process anything else.

Sending my friend my thanks, I fired up my computer and began the download. I kept grinning, as I remembered how much fun we had playing previous titles in the franchise. It had been awhile since we found a game to play together, and I was glad to have one I was sure to enjoy. I’m a rather picky gamer…

About 3 hours, a download, and an install later, I logged into the game and turned on Skype for voice chat (Steam has proven unreliable with their voice chat). It’s an interesting feeling when you begin something new with old friends. There’s an excitement and trepidation. I knew no matter what, I’d have a fantastic time. My generous friend had purchased the game for the other member of our trio, as well, and the gang was back together.

Now, before you all run away from the saccharine sweetness of this tale, I should explain: the game we so thoroughly enjoyed playing together is a First Person Shooter. It has great characters, a story that doesn’t annoy the stuffing out of me, and hilarious writing. My favorite part of the game is sniping headshots, while the boys enjoy the strategy and finding new ways to die spectacularly. And, let’s be real, we all loved blowing stuff up. We settled into it, and I choose a gun-toting badass chick with a killer hat. I was giggling the first time a head exploded like Gallagher’s melons…and I kept giggling for the first hour. There’s just no replacing the joy one receives from a great activity spent with great people.

We played several hours throughout the rest of the weekend, and I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. As I wait to log back in tonight, all I can think is that some of the best people I know are gamers I’ve never met.
