Sources in Hollywood Are now saying that “Avengers” actress Scarlett Johansson has agreed to take on the staring role in the Dreamworks adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell”.
For those not in the know, Ghost in the Shell is largely popular and influential anime property spanning eight years of manga, three films, and two seasons of television. It also served as a major inspiration for the Wachowski brothers 1999 blockbuster “The Matrix”. The story takes place in a cyberpunk future where technology has allowed most of the population to begin replacing their human bodies with cybernetic prosthesis. The plot follows the members of Public Security Section 9 whose role is to engage in counter terrorism operations against a new breed of cyber-criminals.
Steven Spielberg, noted fan of the series, along with Dreamworks acquired the rights to make a live action adaptation in 2008 but have not yet been able to get the movie greenlit. It is unclear at the moment what role, if any, Spielberg will play in the making of this movie but with a name as big as Johansson attached it may not take much longer for fans of the series to find out.
