Last week, we reported that the IUPAC approved and placed four new elements on the periodic table. The next step is naming those elements so they can settle in properly in their new homes.
That process took a viral turn as a petition was started to name element 117 Octarine (Oc) after the “colour of magic” from beloved author Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series.
Sir Terry Pratchett left us in 2015, but his spirit lives on via social media and even his Twitter account approves this petition.
Name element 117 Octarine? If you think that's a good idea – and we do – please sign the petition here; https://t.co/j9MzGXCfFf

After just two days, this petition has garnered over 20,000 signatures. If you think this is a proper way to honor Pratchett’s memory head over and sign the petition.
