Before their was Superman, there was Krypton. SyFy has announced it will be releasing a “Krypton” series which will be telling the story of his ancestors and home planet. The main story will revolve around Superman’s grandfather.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

From Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics, Krypton takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama, which is in development, follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

Ian Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, FlashForward) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Goyer. The story was conceived by both Goyer and Goldberg.

This show series is in the same vein as Fox’s Gotham, the origin story to Jim Gordon and, to some extent, Batman. Gotham has been surprisingly entertaining and if a show about Batman without Batman can enjoy that level of success then a tv show on another planet should fare just fine.
