New “Jumanji” movie may be a sequel

As you may or may not know, there is a new Jumanji movie in the works, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart as well as Jack Black and Nick Jonas. Johnson took to Instagram last week to reveal that the movie starts filming in around a weeks’ time, adding “for the record we are NOT making a reboot, but rather a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story.”
A lot of moviegoers are less than impressed with the swathe of reboots Hollywood has produced in recent years (from the Star Trek franchise and Total Recall to Conan the Barbarian and even Ben Hur), so the news that this isn’t another reboot will please many people.

The original 1995 movie starred Robin Williams as Alan Parrish and Kirsten Dunst as Judy Shepherd, and inspired an animated TV series that ran from 1996-1999. Johnson’s Instagram post seems to insinuate that the events of the new movie will follow on from the 1995 movie – whether that’s accurate remains to be seen.

The movie hits the theaters on July 28th, 2017.
