Just when I thought Twilight had killed everything good about the eternal battle between vampires and werewolves, Kate Beckinsale returns to the Underworld franchise.
I don’t care how many teen girls and desperate housewives loved it, Twilight was horrendous. It tool one of the quintessential fights of horror, the vampire vs the werewolf and turned it in to a teen angst soap opera. And the vampires sparkled. The frigging sparkled! Thankfully, those of us that like vampire and werewolf stories told from a place with less sparkles, had Underworld to fall back on.
The original Underworld introduced us to a modern world where vampires fought their former servants, the Lycans (those are the werewolves yo!). Starring the beautiful Kate Beckinsale, and some guy who had great hair, the movie combined horror and action which turned out to be a great mix. Much better than combining horror with Teen Beat. Hear that Twilighters?
We returned to the well three more times with sequels, but unlike most movies who continue on past a number three, I liked them. I liked them a lot. They’re not art. But they also don’t have Kristen Stewart. No, they have Kate Beckinsale, and that’s an immediate win.
Kate returns to the screen in this fifth installment of the franchise, Underworld: Blood Wars on January 6th, 2017. Plans are already underway for a sixth (and final?) installment to follow.
The original Underworld was released in 2003. Thirteen years later and Kate still looks like that? She might just be a real life vampire, and I’m totally ok with that.
