Unable to find success, Ubisoft bids adieu to Ghost Recon Phantoms.
Ubisoft has announced that they shall shutter the free to play Ghost Recon Phantoms (formerly as Ghost Recon Online). Launched in 2011, Ubisoft claims they couldn’t find success in the free to play venture.
“Unfortunately, GRP was not as successful as we had hoped for, so we had to make the decision to close the game.” states the announcement in their forums.
In a great example of customer service, Ubisoft has granted players “90 days to invest your purchased premium currency in the game. After 90 days, this will no longer be possible as all bought premium currency and items will no longer be accessible when the game is closed.” Oh, and no refunds.
What this really means is, spend it while you’ve got it. We’ll give you 90 days to enjoy it, then it’s all gone to Hell. Along with your online friends. Both the game and the forums come down November 31st. Users that don’t get their gaming friends contact information before that date, will find no help from Ubisoft.
While I’ve never played the game, I can’t help but think this is probably a great way to ensure that players never invest in Ubisoft’s future endeavors of this nature.
