We’ve heard a lot about what our favourite Superheroes are up to here at UTBGeek, but I read just the other day on www.startrek.com that two of my favourite Sci-fi stories are coming together. It would appear that the good people at IDW and BOOM Studios are bringing the crew of the Enterprise to the Planet of the Apes.
According to startrek.com, the Klingons have decided to back a repel gorilla seeking to take control of Ape City and it’s up to Kirk and the crew to help Dr. Zaius restore peace to the beleaguered ape community. Having family financial commitments reduce my comic consumption, this comic series may just be one of my splurges for the financial year. This isn’t the first time Star Trek have done a crossover series. Two of my favourite attempts have been with Dr Who and with the X-men (Having Bones and Beast both answering to ‘Dr. McCoy?’ was a particular favourite gag.)
For those who need filling in, Planet of the Apes is a media franchise which began with the 1968 film of the same name based on Pierre Boulle’s book La Planete des Singes written in 1963. Charlton Heston starred as the human Taylor in that film which had a surprising twist. The film series had a further four follow up movies, all ending with the Planet of the Apes they were titled: Beneath, Escape from, Conquest of and Battle for. There were two short lived television series, one live action and one animated and a pause before the 2001 reboot starring Mark Wahlberg. Ten years later, 20th Century fox made a more successful attempt with Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the newly released Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The third film in the rebooted series is slated to be released on 29th of July 2016.
So what do you think of the this new Star Trek crossover idea? What are you favourite Star Trek crossovers? Sound off in the comments.
